One of the more furtive criminally convicted figures of Fiji’s 2000 coup d'état has re-emerged at a Holy Trinity Anglican Cathedral service in Suva, marking the death of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II.
Wearing a British Special Air Service (SAS) blazer, 85-year-old Illisoni Ligairi – aka Mr White or The Invisible Man – joined others who had roles in George Speight’s 2000 coup and Voreqe Bainimarama’s 2006 putsch.
Most notable, perhaps because of his birthday cake appearance, bemedalled with overstated aiguillette and cumberbunds set on a black uniform, was police commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho. His record during the coups is notorious and documented.
But this was put to one side as he and President Wiliame Katonivere and Speaker Epeli Nailatikau joined with Ligairi.
