I telephoned John Hayes, head of the Pacific desk at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Wellington to find out if New Zealand had plans in place to evacuate nationals if things went worse.
When the time came, he said conspiratorially, I should drive west, carefully, until I reached Nadi. Once there, if I saw a plane with a koru symbol on its tail, and if I had a boarding pass, then I should get on it.
No help there, but the French Ambassador decided that as I was AFP’s correspondent, I was part of his responsibility. He told me a message to assemble at Lami would be sent and the French Navy would pick us up.
