Eleven days before Christmas, Allen, his family and senior staff boarded USS Ontario and went to Pago Pago for a social visit. In Āpia, for the first time ever in Sāmoa, a Christmas display had been mounted, in the shop windows of Burns Philp; ‘The windows were nicely decorated with toys – Father Christmas standing with a blinking light – and the different coloured intermittent lights made a very pretty effect.’
