On several occasions in the first years of World War Two, German ship raiders came near Sāmoa. They were not bothered by any air or naval patrols; the nearest airfield was in New Zealand, 2800 kilometres to the south. Civilian flying boats occasionally passed, touching down in Pago Pago.
