Tonga’s current political events are now mired in a land of confusion. King and prime minister met at a makeshift camp site on the side of the water-filled crater of an active volcano, 600 km away from the Royal Palace in Nuku’alofa. While a handful of amateurish snaps have emerged from the gathering, no statements have followed while rumour is having a feverish weekend.
Speculation is that Prime Minister Hu’akavameiliku Sovaleni has apologised to King Tupou VI who, as a consequence, is moving to end democracy in the kingdom. Completely unconfirmed rumour from many political aware sources is that the king is about to put his son, Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala, and the king’s daughter, Princess Angelika Lātūfuipeka, into cabinet, ending commoner control of government.
